They were mostly caught in Portuguese rivers and estuaries while some lots are from larvae reared in captivity. The collection includes species of 15 orders, being the orders Perciformes (36%), Cypriniformes (32%), Clupeiformes (16%) and Syngnathiformes (7%) the most well represented. Other orders represented are Anguilliformes, Atheriniformes, Batrachoidiformes, Cyprinodontiformes, Gadidae, Mugiliformes, Ophidiiformes, Pleuronectiformes, Salmoniformes, Scorpeaniformes, Tetraodontiformes.
