A colecção é na sua maioria de Portugal e de alguns países africanos de língua oficial portuguesa, nomeadamente Angola, Cabo Verde, Moçambique e Guiné. Existem também exemplares do resto da África e Europa. A colecção resulta da recolha de exemplares em campanhas dirigidas para a sua reconstituição após o incêndio, em trabalhos de investigação e doações. As doações permitiram a integração de espécimes capturados anteriormente a 1978. The crustacean collection of MUHNAC was started in 1984, comprising more than 80,000 specimens. It incorporates mostly crustaceans from Portugal and Portuguese-speaking African countries, namely Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique and Guinea. There are also specimens from other places in Africa and Europe. The collection results from after the fire campaigns, from research and donations. The donations allowed the integration of specimens captured previously to 1978.
